I believe my prayers have been answered from last year. I have gone from a room surrounded by chaos to a sanctuary of peace. The location the the Alumni quad is not amazing, and definitely not a place to walk at night however the quad is nothing like the neighborhood. The building is from the 1900s but in very good shape. Everything is nicely painted and well kept. There is a piano in the main entrance even. My room faces the center of the quad which has a large patch of grass and you get the lovely view of the three other 3 other buildings. Then there is the room itself. Its even bigger than the room at home. It has 2 small walking closets and the floor space makes my room look empty. I will actually have to by furniture to make my room look nicer. Still, the room is 2 times the one I have at home. Now I see why its the most expensive room (but most definitely worth it). The bathrooms are also very well kept and I don’t think I will be reluctant to use them.

Then we have the building it self which happens to be 24/7 quiet. I heard many people telling me to be cautious about this and to a great degree they were right to warn me. It is so quiet and isolated that what is heaven right now could quickly become hell. Everyone here has there own life already. There is no ‘meeting your neighbor’ or ‘orientation’. Everyone here has there own already very defined group of friends and they know what they are doing. If I am to get occupied with something it will be outside this building for sure.

This first year of college has been very interesting. There are too many things that come up when I think about it, such as the day I woke up with a crust of ice on my window, or the numerous dinners with Bill (my roommate), or the many nights which I learned all about what goes on inside someone that takes drugs. And from the one year there, I noticed I never wrote anything substantial about it, so.. with no further ado, here goes all my memories from this past (first) year of college.

My Suitmates and Roommate

Bill (Roommate) In the span of a year we probably did not talk with each other for more than 30 minutes total. Not, me for I’m social and not shy at all. He read Atantic Monthly, had something for Russian, plans on graduating in 3 years with a major in Finances.

Matt The shortest in the room, but also the only one with a girlfriend. He doesn’t seem to be that intelligent but he knows how to be cool. He was also prety fit and workedout quite a bit. He had this thing of waking up Brat (soon to come) with the most abnocious and loud yell I have heard. He has some sense, and as long as he doesn’t get caught he should be alright.

Colin Slightly less lucky than Matt (they were roommates) and did get caught enough to probably be not in school, but yet here he is. His best skill was probably playing video games for 48 hours straight.

Brat He is just a big fat boy who could belongs in middle school (I have nothing agaist him). His brain is just slightly small. He never showered, he could not really talk, and he made girly sounds when watching Colin played some game. Classes were not on his list of priorities or at least not on his top 100. He also managed to get a .8 GPA in his first semester of college.

Ryan I probably learned more from him than from anyone in college. Not anything that will change my world, but the conversations which I doubt he was even aware of having with me were quite interesting. If nothings goes wrong with him, he has a great potential except that his choice in friends are not great.

Spots of Time

Waking up with a thick crust of ice on all the windows of my room.

Late arivals to my room after an unforgetable time back home seeing Brienne and still thinking (and a lot)

Waking up with the sun in my face early in the morning.

Studying in the Campus Center late at night

Christmas carols, happiest hours singing ever (and there are a lot of hours let me tell you)

The smell of illegal activity creaping from the heater

Watching the sunset everyday and thinking that the sumset could be seen from Hopewell

Waking Friday mornings to work on my independent study project

Watching Ryan walking back and forth, and seeing one single AIM window open (sometimes none at all)

Long conversations in the common area late at night

Falling asleep while looking at the distant airport from my window

Sometimes opening my top drawer just to see the picture

Unclamed condom in the bathroom floor, later that weekend Colin’s father walked in and all that could be hear was “Oh Lord”

Walmart candy shopping

The new craving for Christmas Cookies

Watching Bill take 2 showers in the span of 8 hours (before sleep and on waking up)

Brat coming out of his hole twice in the span of 3 days

Helping people in the library with math

Wild parties outside my bedroom door and waking up with people sleeping all over the floor

Crazy taxi driver rides to the train station

Sleepless nights thinking of…

One of the best things about college are the open houses. Not only do they give you free coffee but we, the Chamber Singers, also get to sing as a form of fund raiser ($150 for 15min of singing is pretty sweet). The only issue with this sort of singing is the time, 9am. Sure, I wake up at 9 but, would you wake up 9 if you were drunk? Needless to say 90% of the choir was dealing with some serious hangovers from Friday night’s partying. (You could smell it in the air) I must say I never laughed so much in my life at seeing people trying to sing while under the influence. How can you not laugh when the person next to you starts leaning on you.

I’m not sure about the fate of all of them but one has a probation from school and one from the police. My first reaction when I heard of this: 3 desks for me to use to study (one for the computer, one for the laptop, one for my books).

Edit: Not so cool, I just got the full story about it. The head RA came up to the room to hand letters asking them to meet with her about the suspicion that they were smoking, at that same time three of them were in the same room, and my better of friends was smoking. I feel bad, he knew so well that that could happen, we talked about it last night too…

After one week here I have seen enough to tell me that I should start writing some of this stuff down. But first I should give a brief introduction.

Let’s start with the setting. My suit has three rooms, each one with two people. These three rooms are connected by a main lounge area where the desks for the computers live. A bathroom is also connected to the lounge area.

Now for the inhabitants of the 13th floor of the Statesmen Tower. They don’t really deserve names so I’ll give them other ones or no names at all. First we have a chubby one, he is really stupid but his side kick is smart and he puts him in place (Room # 1). This one actually has a future and is trying to quit smoking. Than we got the two real addicted kids, those wont last freshmen year so I’m sure in one of my entries I’ll describe them getting expelled (Room # 3). And finally there is me and my roommate (Room #2). He is really into European soccer but he is extremely shy so despite the fact that we have been eating dinner/lunch/breakfast together – we rarely talk.

I think this covers just about everything.

People around here are starting to run out of money so more and more they are staying home. So last night I had the lovely company of the one who is trying to quit smoking. We talked a lot, he isn’t bad. It just sucks that he’s stuck in a dorm where you can smeel weed and yet he is trying to stop. Other than that, I think there was a party or something in the room next to mine, they were definitely high and two girls left this morning so the party must have been good.
